Spikeball kickoff check
Spikeball kickoff check
We'll fix these for you
Store: www.spikeball.com
We shopped our store the way a customer would, on a phone and on a computer. We started on the home page, went through a collection and our product pages, added to the cart and went through checkout up to payment, without placing an order. Most of it works well. These six things get in the way of a sale, so we will fix them first.
The Check out button is hidden on phones
What is happening
On a phone, after a shopper adds the TITAN Set to the cart, the cart slides open. A yellow question bubble, "How does the Titan Set fold for transport?", sits exactly where the Check out button should be. The button only appears after the shopper taps the small X on the bubble. On a computer the button shows normally.

Why it costs sales
The cart is the moment a shopper is ready to pay. If the button to pay is hidden, many shoppers will not go looking for it.
What we will do
Keep the question bubble away from the cart, so it never sits on top of Check out. Then we check it again on iPhone and Android.
College Clubs in the phone menu leads to a missing page
What is happening
On a phone, opening the menu and tapping Communities, then College Clubs, lands on a "Page not found" page. On a computer, the same menu item opens the College Clubs page as it should.

Why it costs sales
College club players are a group we want to win over. A dead end sends them away and makes the store feel less looked after.
What we will do
Point the phone menu link to the working College Clubs page and check every other menu link while we are there.
Our Fully Loaded offer charges for the free hat
What is happening
Our TITAN Fully Loaded page promises "$41.99 USD in free gear added at cart. No code needed." The free gear is the Spikeball "PK" Hat ($24.00 value) and the Glow in the Dark Spikeballs (2 Pack) ($17.99 value), and the page says "You pay $159.99" instead of $201.98. In the cart, the Glow 2 Pack came off at $0.00, but the hat was charged at the full $24.00. The cart subtotal was $183.99 instead of $159.99, and checkout came to $195.03 with tax. Checkout also offers the hat and the Glow 2 Pack again as add-ons at $0.00 with "100% Savings", while the hat already in the order is still $24.00.

Why it costs sales
Customers who take this offer pay $24 more than we promised. Some will notice and leave, and some will notice after buying and ask for the money back. Both cost us trust on our main ad offer.
What we will do
Fix the offer so both gifts come off in the cart and the subtotal is $159.99, then stop checkout from offering gifts that are already in the order. Then we run the offer again from the page through to the start of payment to confirm the totals.
The cart says tax is included, then checkout adds tax
What is happening
Our cart says "Taxes included and shipping calculated at checkout." At checkout with a U.S. address, estimated tax is added on top of the price. The TITAN Set at $159.99 came to $169.59 with $9.60 tax, and Spikepong at $34.99 had $2.70 tax added.

Why it costs sales
The cart tells shoppers the price already includes tax. When the total goes up at the last step, it feels like a hidden charge, and that is a common reason people leave checkout.
What we will do
Change the cart line so it says tax and shipping are worked out at checkout, so the cart never promises a total that checkout then changes.
Two different warranty lengths
What is happening
Our product pages, the strip above the footer on every page and our contact page say "Limited 1-Year Warranty on Sets". Our refund policy says our products are covered for the lifetime of the product, which it defines as five years from the date of delivery.

Why it costs sales
When shoppers find two answers, they are not sure which one to trust. And if five years is right, it is a strong reason to buy that almost nobody sees.
What we will do
Confirm the right warranty length with the team, then make every page say the same thing.
Free shipping reads differently on product pages and in the cart
What is happening
Our product pages say "Complimentary shipping & returns" with no condition. The strip above our footer says "Free U.S. shipping on orders of $75+". With Spikepong ($34.99) alone in the cart, the cart says "Spend $40.01 USD more to reach free shipping", and checkout charged $10.00 for standard shipping, with $15.00 and $85.00 for faster options. The total came to $47.69. Our shipping policy page is also empty, so shoppers have nowhere to check the rules.

Why it costs sales
A shopper who expects free shipping and then sees a $10.00 charge feels let down at the worst possible moment. Clear rules from the start keep their trust.
What we will do
Make the product page line match the real offer, for example "Free U.S. shipping on orders over $75". Fill in the shipping policy page, and make sure product pages, cart and footer all say the same thing.
